I don't seem to get the way colors work, for example, when I want to add shadows to a color, I just get a darker color of the primary color and add the shadow, and I know that that's not how I'm supposed to do it, but I don't know how.

Good question. I've had this problem when I started coloring. Well, most people have.
As a rule of thumb, where something has a shadow on it, the shadow is usually not only a darker version of that color, but also a less saturated version. Highly lit places are more saturated.
