PostSubject: Failed drawings [Need help, please] [UPDATE #1]   Failed drawings [Need help, please] [UPDATE #1] I_icon_minitimeThu Jun 21, 2012 2:59 pm

So I decided to draw, I used posemaniacs as reference...
Turns out to be bad, very bad actually.
But the thing is, I didn't draw for 3 months... yeaaahh...
So here are some pretty bad drawings that I did. I will keep drawing and posting my fails here, so stay tuned for more javascript:emoticonp(':S')

In this drawing I wasn't really focusing on the Head nor the legs, more on the upper body (torso), and the hands are fucked up, but the arms seem to be OK, although they lack anatomy.
Even the arrow is a fail javascript:emoticonp('-_-')

Spoiler:

Stay tuned for more fails.

[UPDATE #1]
Another fail.
This was a random pose, I was just drawing without thinking of the pose.

Spoiler:

Stay tuned for more fails :P

It seems you draw the lines without thinking about the shapes.
Have you tried drawing with shapes, I mean that you draw the 3d shapes and volumes that the human body consists of, to get a better feel for how a human body is built?

Nope, I didn't :I

Do you have any kind of reference? So that I can understand it better.

Here's what I mean:

Warning artistic nudity:

Basically, look for how the body curves, how it's shaped and try to look for 3D volumes instead of just the outline of a shadow of that character.

Tom's advice - the key to leveling up your drawing abilities. You don't just want to lay down lines. You wanna sculpt a 3D shape with the pen.

...try to imagine feeling the shape of what you're drawing, then sculpt appropriately. In drawing an arm, imagine taking your hand and feeling that arm out for its shapes - etc.

Tom and Hito hit it right on the head.
It seems you need to be aware of where muscles are and how much they "bulge". Its all in the curves. Dont be mad at yourself, the human figure is like the most challenging thing to draw. If we were just straight lines, it be too easy.

Example:

Of course things change when certain limbs are being stretched. You just have to look at different poses and see how those muscles were affected. Id also advise drawing arms and legs as cylinders. Practice drawing round shapes and shading them correctly to show that the object is indeed round.
Also, please try and use thin lines.

Why are you posting your art if you think its a fail? What do you expect us to help you with if you refuse to take yoyr time when drawing stuff.
One glance at this shows me that you fucking rushed this stuff hardcore. Stop being lazy and get to work.

Ummm, before this is locked, I wanna/need say something.
CubeX, I think its more of the way how you are posting your failures thats got Tom upset. It seems like you are okay with failing and kinda happy/joyed to show us. Theres nothing wrong with posting failures, but you've gotta ask questions and tell us what you need help with when you do. This isnt wheres waldo. Read what Hitorio wrote. He wrote it for a reason. >This Right Here< You gotta ellaborate, tell us what your thinking and what you think might have caused you to "fail". Dont just throw the shit in our arms and say here guys look what I did. We're all here to help each other. Help us Help you basically.

You say you have no inspiration at all, which is okay. Happens to us all. you might just need to take a break if youve been constantly pluggin in the hours. A lot of the times I think it helps to kinda isolate yourself from other people. Ex: You alone in your room. Do away with anything that can distract you like a phone, e mail, etc. Watch movies, interviews, read a good book or about whats going on in other parts of the world. Pay attention most of all. Your human, something will affect you emotionally. Another important thing is you have to be in the right mood. Observe, question and contemplate.

Now with the latest picture you posted: Some of the things in the picture, like his right forearm, are accurate. But this picture again shows a lack of knowledge on anatomy. The way you drew the line for his back makes his torso too wide. Have you looked at Andrew Loomis' figure drawing book? If not look at it. Can be found at fineart.sk
Draw a man standing without reference. Then draw a man standing or look at Andrew Loomis' stadning figure in his book. The one where its showing lines for proportions. Look at the differences in your two drawings. Is that difference because there is a muscle there? Is it different because I drew this limb too long or way too wide. Ask yourself these questions man. Proportions are very important btw.

Do you really think I'm going to let you off the hook that easily? Fuck that, you are going to get better and your fellow psudans, me included, are willing to help you.
As long as you are actively using the constructuve criticism that is given to you by Psudans, you will improve, I can guarantee it, 100%.

The problem is that you read the feedback but don't use that feedback to your advantage, it's like you read it and then continued to draw the stuff in the same way you did before. By doing so, you're completely disregarding everything that is told you which could help you improve and THAT frustrates me.

Stating you lack inspiration is no excuse for not drawing, considering the fact that theres a billion images on the internet that can perfectly serve as inspiration and/or reference.

If you think it is hard to come up with a pose, draw a stick figure in a random pose as it is easier to draw a stick figure like that in a quick sketch than it is to draw the human body quickly. Once you got the stick figure drawn, sketch the human figure doing the same pose.
This way you will be creating your own ideas and reference.
Last points; use the critique, stop drawing using such thick lines, use objects such as spheres, cubes and any other mathematical object you need to actually aculpt the human body, in order to get the right shapes for body parts.

To conclude: no I will not close this topic, and you're going to improve as long as you have the desire to do so and the will to learn from pasf mistakes.

The responses you got are more or less what I think.

Explore some of the first vids in this giant figure drawing course. 100% free - at least the first several vids. I'm not sure what the deal is with the next ones.
http://www.alienthink.com/inventiontocompletehumanbeing.blogspot.html
You'd get a great start on drawing with this.
Draw whatever is being drawn and listen to the words.

Also, inspiration? simple.
You like any movies? Video games? Try daydreaming about them, make some fan art but alter it in your own imaginary world as you please. It generates the fun factor of imagination and helps you have some 'training wheels' for generating ideas.

I'm saying go play one of your favorite games or watch some awesome movie or something and draw about it. Just doodle messy shit, it doesn't matter. Just express your enthusiasm on the paper.

So much rep flyin' around it's ridiculous! Tom, Jones, Edy, You've all told this young fellow exactly what he needs in order to improve.

CubeX, take as much of this advice to heart as you can! ;)
