You sound like a generic salesman. A Billy Mays that pops up out of rodent holes with new a new thread, a tie, and a smile.

Those backgrounds are cool as hell - one reason why painting skills are valuable in the production of animated works. I especially like the backgrounds that don't look painterly, but look as if they're colored drawings (See: Redline).
*After some researching* Actually, I'd say that I like the colored lineart feel for technology, buildings, architectural schitt - and the painterly look for nature - like evening skies and bright plains.

Fortunately, there are artists out there (like Oh!Great. Like Masashi Kishimoto.) that show us that detailed, drawn lineart backgrounds are very possible to produce in practical deadline fashion.
