Speaking of which I should go see Skyfall. Anywho I enjoy her work so i decided to see if how well I could replicate it in expo markers. I'm quite pleased with the result btw.

nah there's nothing wrong with studying other people's artworks, and I remember you using photo references so you'll be fine if you keep doing that too.

anyway the portrait seems kinda flat, shading's kinda all over the place

I recommend you worry more about construction of the head rather than its rendering.

I still did a couple mins of googling to see if I can find out how to get those midtones with expo markers, but I didn't find anything bro.

Beats the hell out of me how he shaded like that lol.
Maybe dabbing with a fabric/tissue against colored in spots can make them more washed out. Also, take drying time into consideration. Also, maybe using a depleted marker gets the desired light shade. In conclusion, you should use a different medium.

I dig the color scheme a bit better in the "finished" version but i'm definitely gonna redo it to make the proportions better, cuz it's not as pretty as her yet.
Once i finish her it's on to the next people in the cast.

My thoughts are that, when it comes to the "lineart" part of the portrait, it seems to require 10x more care and concentration than the other properties of the portrait (color). I'm thinking that, when doing portraits, being loose and unfocused will punch lots of holes in your "fighting style." You wanna try to be as perfect as possible.
...well, that is, if you're gonna try to portrait with the method: Lineart, then color in.

But, uh... being a copymachine doesn't seem all that beneficial to your overall drawing technique. I recommend understanding the face in 3D while trying to sculpt the face into as perfect of a model (compared to the reference) as you can.

Though that's something you've heard before. I wonder, though: how've you responded to it? What do you think about what we've been saying about 3D comprehension? How has that been coming along for you (and I'm not necessarily talking about your recent development)?
